Getting In Touch With Your True Life Purpose

Something Missing?

What is your true life purpose? Do you ever think that something is missing in your life? Perhaps you find yourself thinking, if only I could find that one thing that will make my life would be easier, happier, more fulfilling? When you find that missing piece, everything else would make sense and you could relax and get on with the real job, the purpose you were born for?

How can you get some pointers? Is there a manual? Why do we find it difficult to work out what we want to do with our lives?

Where to go for help?

There is lots of help around, for personal growth and finding your life purpose. I’ve tried quite a few. I have found that different approaches work for different people. The approach that works for you has to meet your own specific needs, fit in with your beliefs, values and interests. So how do you know what’s the right route for you?

For me, the approach that works for my own self-development and charting my life’s purpose has to feel right. And I have found it changes,as I change, as I face different challenges, as I grow.

But sometimes we can’t even tell what feels right. Sometimes we’re so used to putting our own needs aside that we’re not sure how we feel any more and what’s right for us. When I’m in that situation, I just try SOMETHING. I can always learn from the experience. Sometimes I think it would be helpful if we were told how we feel!

In fact there are some therapies that work with this. One such approach I’ve come across uses computerised biofeedback. Sensors are taped to your head to track your brain waves. Then videos are shown for you to watch. The choice of film is changed based on the feedback from your brain waves . I don’t pretend to fully understand the details, although I have tried it. I didn’t enjoy it.

How Your dog can help

If you share your life with a dog you have an option right at your side! You have the perfect monitor and feedback for your feelings, because our dogs know exactly how we feel.

Many dog owner’s today experience discomfort about the relationship they have with their dogs. We might think our dog doesn’t love us and that’s why he doesn’t come back when called. We might feel guilty that they’re not getting the right stimulation, or enough walks. There might be something about the dog’s behaviour that we don’t like, she barks too much, he’s scared of the vacuum cleaner, she’s aggressive on the lead. It’s a problem with the dog, right?

Everything is Connected

The world is our mirror, everything that we see outside is a reflection of what we feel and believe inside of ourselves. This principle also applies to the relationship we have with our dog. Additionally, the dog is connected to us energetically, so the dog acts out what is inside of us. That’s what dogs do, that’s why they’ve managed to live alongside us for so long. Any behaviours and traits that we find irritating in our dog are their response to mirroring something in us that we are avoiding, suppressing or otherwise ignoring for some reason. When we’re happy, they’re responding to that happy feeling. When we’re sad they feel the sadness. When we’re anxious, that anxiety is feeding into them. They just can’t get out of the way of our feelings.

If we use the difficulties that the relationship with our dog brings to us, if we spend time thinking about them then we will get information about how we feel. We will uncover behaviours, beliefs, or traits in ourselves that we were previously not fully aware of. By becoming more aware of, and reflecting on, any feeling of discomfort that our dog brings up in us, we can start to feel our feelings again.
